Brief Biography
Rick Irving, LICSW is a clinical social worker with more than 40 years experience working with children, families and schools.  He graduated from Brown University in 1974, and Boston University School of Social Work in 1976.  He first worked as the Clinical Director of a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed adolescents.  From 1978 to 2014, he worked as a clinical social worker in the Andover Public Schools, working with students at all grade levels.  From 1982 to 2019, he also maintained a private practice, working with children with behavioral, emotional and learning disabilities.  He also consulted to parents and schools about their children’s issues.

 Rick continues to present many workshops and has been a keynote speaker at conferences in Massachusetts and overseas.  He has presented at conferences in Nice, Rome, Madrid, Birmingham and Stockholm.  He has also consulted to schools in Brussels, Amsterdam, The Hague, Madrid and Rome.

Presenter at Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education Annual School Mental Health Conference, February 1-2, 2013, Boston, MA. "Parents are Sensitive People: Strategies for Creating Positive Parent-School Interactions."

Consulted to schools in Amsterdam, Belgium, Madrid, and Rome, providing staff development and training on self-esteem, child and adolescent development, learning styles, and learning disabilities, classroom behavior management, intervention techniques with children dealing with divorce/losses. Consultation included workshops for parents on issues of child development, self-esteem, and learning styles.

Keynote Speaker and Workshop Leader at conferences in Birmingham, Stockholm, Nice, Madrid, and Rome. Presented about and conducted workshops on clinical and educational issues related to child and adolescent development and treatment, behavior management, development of self-esteem, response to child and family trauma.

Direct service treatment provided to children and families. Caseload includes children with developmental delays, learning disorders, ADHD, behavior disorders, mild to severe physical handicaps, physical/sexual/emotional trauma. Responsible for evaluation, development of treatment plans with specific and measurable goals, and provision of treatment to children ages early childhood to adolescence. Regular member of multi-disciplinary special education and regular education child evaluation and treatment teams. Consultation to teachers and parents on child management techniques.
